================================= Basic Xastir Install instructions ================================= Updated: May 20, 2004 21:12 For the latest instructions: http://www.lintronix.com/winxastir/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- Sections in this document: 1. Basic Xastir Install 2. Run Xastir with Cygwin 3. Shutting down Xwindows --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Basic Xastir Install ----------------------- Install Cygwin * Run the install program (CD\cygwin\setup.exe) (Note: "CD" above and in the balance of this document refers to the CD-ROM letter on your system. For Example: D:) - [Next] at the first information screen - select (x) Install from local directory - select the root directory for the install. "c:\cygwin" is a good choice - Install For (x) All Users ( ) Just Me - Default Text File Type ( ) DOS (x) Unix - [Next] - Select Local Package Directory, the cygwin folder on the CD - example: (CD\cygwin) - [Next] Setup loads the packages and goes to the "Select Package Screen"... - Click the [VIEW] button (once) to get "Full" listing - Scroll down until the "xastir" package shows. It's just above the large number of Xwindows packages. Click on the "Skip" in the new column. The "Skip" will change to the Xastir version which is currently 1.2.1-2. Many other packages will be automatically selected as being dependencies of Xastir. This is also a good time to pull in the Xastir source code. Click on the [] in the SRC column. - Click [NEXT]. The install proceeds now. It will take a few minutes depending on the speed of your computer system and CD-ROM drive. - When finished, you have the choice of creating a Start Icon either on the Windows Desktop or the start menu. I find having the start Icon on the desktop to be convenient. [X] Create icon on Desktop [ ] Add icon to start menu Click [FINISH]. - One last window to clear: Cygwin Setup - Installation Complete - [OK] Cygwin is installed. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Run Xastir with Cygwin ------------------------- - Double click the new Cygwin icon on the desktop to launch Cygwin for the first time. This creates some necessary files in the home directory of the current user. - type "exit" to close the Cygwin shell window. As suggested in the Readme.win32 file, this is a good time to create a shortcut on the desktop for X-Windows. - Right click on the Windows desktop and select "New - Shortcut" - Browse through the Cygwin folders: C:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\Bin, select "startxwin.bat" and [open]. [NEXT], ("c:\cygwin" is shown here on the assumption that is where Cygwin was installed. If you installed it elsewhere, adjust the path appropriately.) Select a name for the shortcut - "Xwindows" is good. [NEXT] Select an icon for the shortcut - I like the cloud with lightning. (is there a real X-windows icon we can use?) and [FINISH] - Double click the new Xwindows shortcut. After a bit of disk activity, a "X" should appear in the lower right system tray and a "X bash" window will appear. This window is similar to the previous shell window but it's appearance will markedly different. X-windows is running! You can now close (click the [x] in the upper right corner, the initial DOS window used to start Xwindows. See the Hints.txt document for a hint on how to better handle this initial window.) - Now's a good time to create a shortcut (or soft link in Unix terms) from your home directory to the Xastir executable. type in the Xterm window, after the $: ln -s /usr/local/bin/xastir.exe xastir(CR) - This is a good time to create the pass code for your callsign if you haven't already.. type, after the $: /usr/local/bin/callpass.exe CALLSIGN The program will respond: Passcode for CALLSIGN is ##### Write down this number! You'll need it when ever you use Xastir with an Internet Server. - The first time Xastir runs, it will generate a large number of diagnostic messages. These are normal and expected. Run xastir: xastir(CR) After a bit more disk activity, you'll see the following (initial picture .bmp) - Enter your callsign. Select the menu "File - Configure > Station" Click in the edit box for Callsign, replace NOCALL with your callsign. Enter your Lat(itude) and LONG(itude) if you know it. If not, you can approximate it with the next step. Click [OK] - Load the first map. Click on "Map - Map Chooser" and select one of the preloaded maps. Click [OK]. Being in Western Washington, I normally select JPUGET.MAP. You'll see the map show up on the initial grid display as a small blotch of color. Zoom in on your home location. Click on the upper left region, drag to the lower right and release the mouse. Repeat as necessary to closely locate your position. You'll see your callsign with a X symbol if you've previously entered a latitude and longitude location. If you didn't enter a position, you may place your station by Right Clicking on the map at you current location, hold the button down, scroll to the bottom of the pop up menu and select the "Move my station here" choice. - All that remains is to setup an Interface. For now, we'll go with an Internet Server connection. Select Menu "Interface - Properties" to bring up the Installed Interfaces dialog. Click Add. Select "Internet Server" and [ADD]. Enter the Internet address of a Host, aprswest.net, is a good first try. I clear (unclick) the Activate on Startup selection as I don't have a full time Internet connection and it creates a significant delay when starting with no Internet. Enter a Port of 10152. Enter your station Passcode if you calculated it previously. (Use Port 14579 for Western U.S. APRS traffic.) Click [OK] to close the "Configure Internet" dialog box. [Close] the Installed Interfaces dialog. To start data flowing from the interface you just created, Select Menu - Interface - "Start/Stop", highlight it by clicking on the new interface and then click [START]. You should see data being displayed in the lower status bar of the Xastir program window. [Close] the Interface Configuration dialog window. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Shutting down Xwindows ------------------------- * Close Xastir by selecting - 'exit' in the Xastir Xwindow * Right click on 'X' in System Tray and select "exit" to close Xwindows.
